Delaware

Surf's Up
This photo was taken during a snowstorm in Rehoboth Beach, DE. We had just driven through a blizzard from Baltimore to Rehoboth Beach on the President's Day weekend in February, 1996. It was still snowing when I took this photograph from the 4th floor balcony of out hotel room, overlooking the boardwalk and beach. The force of the storm drove the waves far up the beach. The colors and textures caught my eye.

Boardwalk Patterns
The day after the blizzard described above was bright and clear. This photograph was also taken from our balcony, looking straight down at the boardwalk below. I just liked the combination of lines, sun, shadow and snow.

Pelican Mail Box
This wooden mailbox, in the shape of a Pelican, is located right outside of the Wild Birds Unlimited store in Rehoboth Beach, DE. The previous day's blizzard gave it an intresting "coat" of snow.

Maryland

Winterland

This view of our backyard was taken after one of those heavy, wet snows.

Apples
Taken at Catoctin Mountain Orchard in Thurmont, Maryland.

New Jersey

Victorian Cape May
Cape May, NJ is a restored Victorian seaside resort. Many of the restored houses, like the one shown here, are Bed & Breakfast establishments. The design and colors allowed on buildings in the Historical District are strictly controlled.

New York

Waterfalls In The Finger Lakes
One of the wonders of the Finger Lakes region of New York State is that there are so many waterfalls. Due to the geology of the area, water seeps throughout the plateaus and waterfalls such as this one are almost common. See Views And Vistas for more about the Finger Lakes

Waterfalls In The Finger Lakes 2
Another view of the falls shown above. I'm not sure which one I like better.

Winery Barn in New York State
It was one of those glorious fall days, when the sky was bright blue and the sun was shining but there were lots of clouds. I just liked the contrast of light and dark, straight lines and curves, sun and deep shade.

Vineyard In The Finger Lakes2
This is the same vineyard in the photograph in Views And Vistas and I did not change the settings on my camera quickly enough to compensate for the sudden clouds. Nevertheless, I like the dark, brooding effect a little underexposure gives.

Virginia

Battle Line
Newmarket, Virginia was the sight of an important Civil War battle in 1864. During that battle, cadets from Virginia Military Institute were positioned behind this fence. Interestingly, there is another, current "battle" being waged on the very spot. Two competing museums, one run by a private enterprise and the the other by VMI, both claim to be be THE New Market Battlefield Museum. The former museum has signs declaring the latter to be illegal. The latter museum has signs along the road instructing drivers to tune their car radios to an AM station to hear a taped broadcast describing their museum and directions to the museum.

Cavalry Museum
This old house, next to the New Market Battlefield described above, houses The Cavalry Museum. It sits on a hill overlooking the city, situated in the Shenendoah Valley, below Skyline Drive.

The Sentinal
On a high ridge on Skyline Drive, at the Stony Man Mountain Overlook, el. 3100', this tree struggles to survive.

West Virginia

Fence Post
On the back road described in Views And Vistas, I saw this weathered fence post. Time and the elements have weathered it to this color and texture.

The Stream At Greenland Gap
This is a closeup of the stream at Greenland Gap, in Scherr, West Virginia, detailed in Views And Vistas.

Pumpkins
This photograph and the next one were taken at a produce stand near Charles Town, West Virginia.
